Why You Shouldn’t Compare Your Home to Magazine Pictures

posted by Andrea | 08/18/2012 | 16 comments

I’m sure at some point, we’ve all thumbed through home decore magazines and wished our homes looked even half as lovely as the stunning homes in those photographs. Or maybe I’m the only one?

If you’ve ever felt disheartened by your home’s lack of “perfection”, I’ve got a real-life story that might just cheer you up!

Simple Ways I Transform Our Home For Spring

posted by Andrea | 03/22/2012 | 3 comments

Here in West Michigan, we’ve had record-breaking high temperatures the past 2 weeks {it’s been in the 80’s all week!} so it’s felt like Spring for while already — and I’m not complaining!

However, since it’s now officially spring, I thought I’d share a few simple ways I transform our home for Spring.

Simple Ways to Decorate With Photos

posted by Andrea | 03/8/2012 | 6 comments

I’ve been trying REALLY hard to take lots of photos these days. However, I often get annoyed with myself for taking so many pictures… but then keeping them “locked up” in my camera, my phone, or on our portable hard drive.

So I’ve been making an effort to print more pictures lately, and since photos are relatively inexpensive {compare to pricey art pieces} I thought I would share a few different ideas for decorating your home with photos.

Creative, Decorative, and Inexpensive Storage Solutions

Whenever I work with organizing clients their #1 question is usually “what type of storage containers should I buy?”

And while I agree that storage containers are a big part of any organizing project, I ALWAYS tell them not to buy anything because, I first try to take something they already own and re-purpose it as a storage container for their specific space — saving them time, money, and space.

Here are a few of my favorite creative, decorative, and inexpensive storage ideas from around our house!

Taking Down Christmas Decor

As much as I LOVE putting up our Christmas decorations… I also love taking them down again.
Yes, it takes the better part of an afternoon to gather them all into my storage bins and bring them downstairs, but after I’m done, the house feels so open, light, and un-cluttered.

I packed up our decorations this past weekend… and have a few tips to simplify and organizing the process.

A Farmhouse Christmas

I know it’s still the day before Thanksgiving — but since I’m over nine months pregnant and since I wasn’t able to put up many decorations last year — I decided to get a head start on holiday decorating this year.

And I’m SO glad I did!!

Disposable Decorations for Fall

Disposable decorations are items you can find for free or relatively inexpensively in your yard, around your home, or at a local grocery store. Then, after the season or holiday is over, you can simply throw the decorations away {or compost them}.

By using mostly disposable decorations, I hardly have to store any decorations, yet I’m still able to keep our entire house “festive” all year long.

A Simple Curtain Tutorial

I made these simple {almost no-sew} curtains for our master bathroom last week — and I was simply thrilled with the results. Plus, they only took about an hour of time and cost less than $2.00!!

See how I used a little burlap, twine, and a few wooden buttons to create these adorable curtains for our home!

Holiday Decor {I Just Couldn’t Resist!}

posted by Andrea | 11/26/2010 | 13 comments

It’s the day after Thanksgiving — a.k.a. Black Friday. Normally, I would spend this day shopping for great bargains or putting up Christmas decorations — often times I’d do both. However, this year, I told myself I would do NEITHER. Since we’re moving in just a few weeks, I figured there was absolutely no point in putting up my holiday decor or buying anything else {even if it was an excellent deal} …after all, I’m just being practical right? While I […]

Simple Fall Decor

I’m a big fan of decorating with disposable items; mainly so I don’t have to store them all year round. Since fall is my favorite season {I live in Michigan — it’s gorgeous!} it would be so easy for me to accumulate gobs of fun decor items, but I don’t. I only allow myself one (yes ONE) small tub. Honest! If you really think about it, I should have no trouble decorating with items from nature such as fruits, gourds, […]

Saturday Stumbles: Design Inspiration

This week was one crazy week! On top of doing everything I normally do each week {which is already a lot}, I decided that it was time to redecorate our living room and our office. It’s been 4 years now and I keep pushing it off in hopes that we might move out of our suburban ranch into an adorable  farmhouse in the country. Unfortunately, I don’t think that’s going to happen for a few more years, and I’m fine with that. […]
