Over the past few months, as I thought more about how I could simplify and consolidate all the various things I do each day and each week to keep our house fairly organized and clutter-free, I realized that there are 6 main categories I try to focus my attention on each week.
I added in one day for extra projects (or for rest) and I came up with a 7-day Housekeeping Guide that encompases most of extra things I do every week. I hope some of my ideas will help you too!
I’m a huge advocate for automating as many things as possible — banking, bill pay, grocery deliveries, and even furnace filters! For the past year, I’ve been using FilterEasy’s fabulous filter delivery system, which means I never have to think about changing furnace filters again!

Homemaking and parenting has never been (and will never be) “easy”, but with a little extra support, some helpful modern conveniences, and a boatload of useful resources, it’s getting EASIER!
What are your thoughts on parenting and homemaking today versus in past generations?
The cost of paint and painting supplies has gone up a lot over the past 10 years — I was shocked to see how expensive my favorite paint brushes were the last time I was at the hardware store.
So, since we’re ramping up for another spring and summer of house projects in the Dekker home, I thought it was a good time to share a few simple ways I try to extend the life of my paint brushes.
Now that James is inching closer to 8 months old, he is crawling all over the place, trying to pull himself up on furniture, and grabbing anything and everything he can grab. I have no doubt that he’ll be taking his first few steps in no time — which means it’s time to put a few more baby-proofing precautions in place!
Today, I’m sharing 10 simple ideas to keep your house safe for young children… and save your sanity in the process!
Over the past 5 years, the number of questions, comments, and emails I’ve gotten regarding our white couch still amazes me!
So…I thought it might be time for a post detailing exactly what I do to wash and dry our slipcovers (and why on earth I still have a white couch with 3 little kids!)
If you live in (or travel to) the Midwest, you know how beautiful our fall weather is. However, there is also a lot of work to do in the fall.
Today (by request from a few readers) I’m sharing a rundown of what Dave and I do to “winterize” our home and yard for the Fall and Winter months ahead.
For some reason, changing our furnace filters is a seasonal task that I either forget to do, or put off doing because our furnace requires a really random size filter that is not readily available at most home improvement stores.
However, I recently found FilterEasy, an online air filter delivery service — and I’m so excited to share more about it with you. Oh yeah, and there’s a fun giveaway!
We always have at least 2 or 3 rolls of plastic wrap as I’ve found it comes in handy SO often (and not just in the kitchen).
Today, I’m sharing 10 different uses for my favorite type of plastic wrap (Glad Press ‘N Seal).
Although Dave and I are oddballs and moved into our house the week before Christmas (yes, in frigid West Michigan), spring is actually the peak “moving season” in most parts of the country.
If you have plans to move this spring or summer (or if you’re dutifully helping friends or family move) here are 6 tips that should simplify and streamline the moving process!
While I realize that many of you might not share my ultra-enthusiastic views of homemaking, I DO think that every one of us wants our home to be a place we enjoy spending time with our family and friends. For some of us, it just takes a little extra motivation and willpower to get there — and that’s OK 🙂
Today, I’m sharing what being a “homemaker” means for me — as well as some great resources for those of you looking for a little of that motivation!
Dave and I have been using the Trash Buddy for the last couple of months — and I’m so excited to share it with you in today’s giveaway!
The Trash Buddy is a super simple solution to messy trash spilling out of your trash can or recycling bin… and let me assure you, your neighbors will appreciate that 🙂
After our end-of-summer party last week, Dave and I are in full-on “Fall Mode”. We’ll be outside almost any chance we get raking and mulching leaves, dead-heading flowers, splitting perennials, draining hoses, cleaning yard tools, emptying flower pots, and preparing our home for the COLD Michigan winter that is just weeks away.
Today, I’m sharing a few simple and frugal ways we’re preparing our home and our yard for cold weather.
When we purchased our home 3.5 years ago, we figured the kitchen would be one of the last projects we tackled — but as many of you know, our plans changed!
We renovated our kitchen 2 summers ago (I can’t believe it’s been that long already) and today, I’m sharing some answers to commonly asked questions I get regarding our massive renovation.
When people learn what I do for a living, they often assume I’m a “minimalist” and can’t stand any amount of STUFF in my home and life. However, that is absolutely not true at all.
Today I’m sharing my thoughts on minimalism and why I’m NOT a minimalist.
Our reclaimed barn wood floors are one of my favorite things about our house — and one of the things I get the MOST questions on from blog readers and random internet browsers.
So today, I’m sharing the answers to many of these questions along with loads of gorgeous photos of various reclaimed barn wood flooring!
In case you didn’t know, we really like our farmhouse 🙂 Yes, there are so many things that still need to be fixed and updated and so many crazy “why the heck did the previous owners do that?” questions.
But among other things, there are 3 huge reasons we fell in love with our house… Location, Location, Location!
I’ve been sharing lots of eBook deals lately, but that’s because ebooks are a fabulously frugal (and clutter-free) way to read.

Every fall, about this time, Dave and I start to feel overwhelmed with all the home maintenance projects that need to happen before winter arrives. I’m sure all homeowners can relate!
Here are some of the projects we’re hoping to tackle this fall…
It’s Labor Day weekend — and that almost always means some sort of painting project for the Dekkers. This year, we’re painting our kitchen walls, trim, and ceiling, as well as our front entry way.
If you are planning any upcoming painting projects, you’re going to love today’s giveaway. The Paint Brush Cover is a really simple concept — but boy do they save your brushes. Oh, and I’m giving away 25 of them today!
