Spring is Here!

posted by Andrea | 04/14/2011

The weather is finally starting to warm up here in West Michigan, and we even opened the windows a few times!

After a long, cold winter, it’s hard not to love everything about spring. But the one thing I look forward to the most is watching the first flowers start to pop out of the ground. And since we moved in the middle of winter, I have been SOOOOOO anxious to see what type of plants were covered by all the snow.

I know it still doesn’t look like spring from a distance… but if you look closely, you’ll see that we have beautiful plants, shrubs, and flowers popping up everywhere!

There are tons of buds on this small “weeping” tree by our porch. I hope they are pretty because this is what we see out of our dinning room windows.

Our yard has pockets of lilies everywhere {one of my favorite low-maintenance plants}.

And these purple, weird-looking sprouts will grow into big peony bushes with really gorgeous, delicious smelling blooms.

We have two huge rhododendron plants right outside our bedroom window. I can’t wait until they bloom!

Parts of our back yard are really shady so the 30+ hostas should look amazing…once they finally decide to pop out of the ground.

I have no idea what these little buds are, but we have a row of them lining the West side of our property so I hope they look nice!

And of course, what would spring be without basketball? Yes, he made that shot :)

We’ve been doing a bunch of yard work lately, trying to spruce things up as much as possible while still focusing the bulk of our efforts on all the construction inside.

It’s been great to get a little fresh air and do some physical labor that doesn’t involve drywall dust, plumbing, or wallpaper!

What are your favorite things about spring?

My favorite thing about spring is cleaning out the flower beds and rediscovering everything you had growing there the previous summer. I love spring time, and all of the allergies that come along with it. I have been prepping my garden for this years seeds and crops and I can’t wait to get planting. only a few more weeks to go! The garlic planted from last fall is already 3 or 4 inches tall!

Yes Leslie — I love that too! We’ve been cleaning out LOTS of flower beds this week and discovering all sorts of fun plants.

Unfortunately, I most likely won’t have a vegetable garden this year, but I’m hoping to “dig ground” this fall…and I’ll definitely be planting garlic!!

I am so jealous of your green lawn. That is one thing I miss about living in Michigan – nice green lawns without having to water. We’re still waiting for the greening up here in Colorado.

Yes, the great lawn is nice. However, if we don’t run our sprinklers, it will turn brown by July!

    Thanks Lori,

We had many peony bushes at our first house — so I’m SUPER excited to have them again at our new house! They are great for flower arranging…as long as you can get the ants out first :)
