Maybe Busyness Isn’t Always Bad

posted by Andrea | 01/6/2017 | 7 comments

Sometimes, I think we get sucked into thinking that all busyness is bad, unnecessary, and something that could or should be avoided — like if our lives are busy, we’re doing something wrong.

But in reality, busy times are often just part of life. They are not always avoidable, nor are they always bad…

Merry Christmas from the Dekkers

As I’ve done for many years now, I’ll be taking the week between Christmas and New Years as a short blogging break. It’s such a nice time to step away from my computer and social media for a few days, and I always come back after the New Year with so many blog post topics and ideas!

Today I’m sharing our 2016 Christmas card, and a little bit about what I hope to do (and not do) over our Christmas break!

Live or Artificial? My Internal Christmas Tree Debate

posted by Andrea | 12/16/2016 | 46 comments

Although I was fairly certain we would get a live tree once we were living out on our own, Dave and I have been using a thrift store artificial Christmas tree for the past 11 Christmases 🙂

Every year I have some sort of internal debate about if we should keep using our artificial tree or go buy a real one…

posted by Andrea | 12/5/2016 | 41 comments

I wasn’t planning to do a post about “simplifying Christmas”, but after receiving an astonishing number of emails, comments, and Facebook messages requesting this post, I decided to share 5 things we do (or rather DON’T do) to simplify our holiday season.

While it does take a decent amount of extra effort to host a gathering (even if we do keep things simple) we generally enjoy having others over to our house — especially since it’s often an easier option than loading up the kids to go somewhere else!

If you are entertaining this holiday season, here are 10 simple tips that should help things go a bit smoother — and allow you to actually enjoy your time with family and friends!

Why We Didn’t Do Traditions This Year

posted by Andrea | 12/18/2014 | 39 comments

Over and over again, I’ve been asked what family traditions we take part in over the holiday season. Over and over again, I’ve felt slightly ashamed when I explain that we really didn’t do any traditions this year.

No, I’m not the Grinch — I actually love the holidays. However, I refuse to let a “but we’ve always done it that way” get in the way of me and my family enjoying this time of year.

What To Do With Old Holiday Cards

In the next couple of weeks, Christmas and other holiday cards will start filling up our mailboxes… but what will we do with those cards in another couple months, when the holidays are over?

Today, I’m sharing what I do with our holiday cards, and I’d love to know if you have any simple ways to reuse holiday cards.

Merry Christmas! – 2013

We’re all excited for Christmas over here; but honestly, I think I sometime like Christmas Eve even better than Christmas Day. It’s quieter, more low-key, less hoopla, less busyness, and just simpler.

Due to the holidays, having family in town, and a fun little pre-baby holiday getaway Dave and I are taking later this week, I’ll be taking the rest of the week off from blogging. But I’ll see you back here on New Year’s Day!

How The Dekker’s “Do Christmas”

posted by Andrea | 12/20/2013 | 16 comments

Over the past years, I’ve gotten numerous questions about how Dave and I “do Christmas”. And since I’ve only blogged a little bit about each of these topics sporadically over the past 3+ years, I thought it might be time to consolidate it all into one nice, neat post.

Today, I’m sharing how Dave and I have been “doing Christmas” for the last 8 years — everything from holiday cards and gift-giving to family traditions, Christmas decorations, holiday parties, and more!

Yummy Pull-Apart Herb Biscuits

There are few things I love more than the smell of bread baking in my oven… even if that bread came from a can in the refrigerated section of my grocery store!

The recipe I’m sharing today is OH SO simple, and will turn a can of biscuits or rolls into a fabulously delicious side dish, worthy of even your pickiest eaters…

However, I couldn’t just leave for two weeks without wishing you all a VERY Merry Christmas, or without sharing our 2012 Christmas card — and a few cute family pictures!

Creative & Clutter-Free Gifts {Day 6} = Acts of Service

posted by Andrea | 12/1/2012 | 3 comments

Today is the last day in my week-long Creative & Clutter-Free Gifts series… and it’s my favorite clutter-free gift of all {acts of service}.

I’ve always been a big fan of service gifts — much more so now that I’m married, have a house to maintain, and a child! I’d take the “gift” of a cleaned kitchen or a few hours of babysitting over almost anything from the store… any day!
