UPDATE: This giveaway is now closed.
Even as a very small child, some of my favorite play-time activities were playing store {I was the cashier} and writing numbers in my “bank book” {see picture below}.
When I was six, my parents helped me open my first savings account and then make small deposits on a regular basis. You can probably imagine how excited I was to balance a REAL bank register after each deposit!
I opened a checking account when I was 18, and was extremely hesitant to spend even one penny more than I absolutely had to! I used coupons to buy groceries all through college, and worked as many hours as I could to quickly pay off my student loans.
Now that I’m “all grown up” I’m still frugal, I still use coupons, I still don’t spend money if I don’t have to, and I still balance my bank register after every transaction {yes, I do online banking too!}
Basically, I’ve been frugal for as long as I can remember — thanks in large parts to my parents who have always encouraged me and my sisters to save, save, save!
Because of my love for frugal living, I am simply ecstatic about today’s giveaway — The Money Saving Mom’s Budget. It’s a brand new book written by one of my blogging friends, Crystal Paine of MoneySavingMom.com.
Crystal’s book is not only packed FULL of hundreds of tips and tricks to save more, spend less, and pay off debt; it also contains a wealth of information on how to simplify and organize your entire life… which I’m all in favor of 🙂
Plus the entire book is written from a “normal” person’s perspective on finances; so you won’t have to weed through financial jargon or constantly wonder if you’re understanding it correctly.
As I was reading her book, I kept thinking “I could have written this” because I honestly agree with pretty much everything she says. You can read more about her book here, but then come back and enter to win one of 5 copies!
The Giveaway:
Today, five lucky readers will win a copy of Crystal’s new book, The Money Saving Mom’s Budget!
How to Enter:
1. Leave a comment. How are you trying to save more and spend less this year?
2. Like Simple Organized Living and/or Money Saving Mom on Facebook, and then leave a separate comment letting me know you did {or that you do already}.
If you are reading this in your email or feed reader, please visit the actual blog post to enter. Email entries, Facebook comments, and Twitter messages will NOT be counted.
Prizes:
(5) copies of The Money Saving Mom’s Budget as described above.
This giveaway ends at 10:00 pm on Tuesday, 1/17/2012 and is open to all U.S. and Canadian residents 18 years or older. I will use And the Winner Is to select the winning comments at random. Winners will be notified by email and noted at the top of this post. Winners must respond within 48 hours of notification to claim their prize or I will choose a new winner. Please see my full disclosure policy and contact me with any questions you have. Good luck!

I have always tried to save! I do NOT get myself much of anything unless I have no other choice. However, my husband is the very opposite so I am in charge of the bank account and debit cards have been turned off. He is completely okay with that because since he and I do not habe a handy card, we cant swipe it and if we dont have cash on us, we cant spend it ๐ My oldest son has some health issues where just his medicine alone is from $1,200-$1,500.00 a year. It is Crazy! So, we opened a health savings account (hsa) up through my husbands work. It has helped budget as well. I would really love to be able to budget better. My head stays inside my check book and stack of bills…always paying, balancing, stressing, etc. and my husband doesnt understand. I hope I can win one of these books. It would be a wonderful thing to wake up on my birthday, Jan. 17th to see if I won!! Thank you!

My husband and three kids love Friday nights. That’s the only day we choose eat out. So, to save money we decided to start making our favorite dishes at home. For instance, pizza and wing night normally cost us $25 for one meal. Instead, we starting buying frozen pizza for $6.99 and organic chicken wings for $3.10. We are saving $14.91 every single week!

To try to save money and get on track this year, I am busily working on a spreadsheet to keep track of out budget, and I’m clipping coupons like mad. I’m also going to pay cash for groceries to keep us on budget there, as that is always a miss for us.

I have started leaving my kids at home when I do my grocery shopping or have my husband stop on his way home with my list. Sounds crazy but it’s cut our grocery bill down! No more, “I want that!” or “Can we get this?”. Helps a lot! Plus, I’m able to focus more on prices and get what’s on sale when I’m not rushing through the store with my kids.

I started selling Avon for additional income. I’ve also got my husband clipping coupons and looking for deals. Additionally, we’re selling stuff we don’t need and buying some things second hand that we used to buy new. We’re trying to figure out how to work together on the budget (to find what works best for mutual satisfaction).
I already liked Money Saving Mom, and now I like Simple Organized Living too!

This year I am making as many ‘home cleaners’ as possible and also looking for extra ways to earn money while still caring for my 4 children at home.

~We bought our home outright last April two days before we got married, it was a foreclosure in need of major help. This year we are frequenting the Habitat for Humanity Restores in our area to find affordable deals to repair our home. ~ We are eating out less than we did (but even when dating we didn’t eat out alot) and we are writing down when and where we eat out on the calendar so we are more aware and remember our outings. After being single for 35 years and on my own for 15 it has been difficult to come up with daily meals for two that aren’t expensive and aren’t boring…I have been trying the freezer/ canning method and have had some luck. I made vegetable beef soup this week and canned several jars, we will eat these when I don’t have time to cook a meal and my husband will like to take it to work for lunch one day in the future
We aren’t afraid to work in order to save a little money….
~My husband had the opportunity to get a unit of 2×4’s that were adhered together by mold, we put bleach water in the pressure washer and got down to business. We are now building a small goat house (we just bought 2 kids) and a small chicken coup ( we also bought 11 laying hens and one rooster)
I have been a nurse for 15 years but was laid off in 2010 when they closed our L&D unit. I had just met my now husband and have been unemployed for over a year now, major difference in income, pray I’ll soon find a part time job so we can rebuild our savings. My husband has a credit card and we use it only when absolutely needed and we are sure to pay it off right away…Hate paying interest for anything!
