UPDATE: This giveaway is now closed.
Even as a very small child, some of my favorite play-time activities were playing store {I was the cashier} and writing numbers in my “bank book” {see picture below}.
When I was six, my parents helped me open my first savings account and then make small deposits on a regular basis. You can probably imagine how excited I was to balance a REAL bank register after each deposit!
I opened a checking account when I was 18, and was extremely hesitant to spend even one penny more than I absolutely had to! I used coupons to buy groceries all through college, and worked as many hours as I could to quickly pay off my student loans.
Now that I’m “all grown up” I’m still frugal, I still use coupons, I still don’t spend money if I don’t have to, and I still balance my bank register after every transaction {yes, I do online banking too!}
Basically, I’ve been frugal for as long as I can remember — thanks in large parts to my parents who have always encouraged me and my sisters to save, save, save!
Because of my love for frugal living, I am simply ecstatic about today’s giveaway — The Money Saving Mom’s Budget. It’s a brand new book written by one of my blogging friends, Crystal Paine of MoneySavingMom.com.
Crystal’s book is not only packed FULL of hundreds of tips and tricks to save more, spend less, and pay off debt; it also contains a wealth of information on how to simplify and organize your entire life… which I’m all in favor of 🙂
Plus the entire book is written from a “normal” person’s perspective on finances; so you won’t have to weed through financial jargon or constantly wonder if you’re understanding it correctly.
As I was reading her book, I kept thinking “I could have written this” because I honestly agree with pretty much everything she says. You can read more about her book here, but then come back and enter to win one of 5 copies!
The Giveaway:
Today, five lucky readers will win a copy of Crystal’s new book, The Money Saving Mom’s Budget!
How to Enter:
1. Leave a comment. How are you trying to save more and spend less this year?
2. Like Simple Organized Living and/or Money Saving Mom on Facebook, and then leave a separate comment letting me know you did {or that you do already}.
If you are reading this in your email or feed reader, please visit the actual blog post to enter. Email entries, Facebook comments, and Twitter messages will NOT be counted.

we try to spend less money this year by simply using up all “hoarded” stuff and doing with a little less.
this should make it also easier to start simplifying and organizing our small space

This year I have resolved to step up my couponing and take a hard look at where my money is being spent on miscellaneous items such as convenience stores, big chain stores as Walmart and such. As a single mom of 3 on a single income, this year is all about better control to make room for that car I’m gonna have to buy to replace our really old one soon. I’d rather have some saved for when the time comes then nothing at all.

I have liked MSM for just over a year and follow her posts regularly. I just now discovered your blog and am very excited to learn even more tricks of the trade from you! (I found you on FB too!) Our resolutions for this year include being a better steward with our money. I have taken to hang drying my clothes to save money, using coupons on more purchases, and eating out less!
Cheryl says
We hardly ever eat out or go to movies at the theater. I air dry most of the laundry and the dishes in the dishwasher.
Rachel Balint says
I am getting into mega couponing, starting a small stockpile, cooking from scratch, cutting bills, and planning ahead. All in all, we’ve already saved a ton!
I already like, or should I say love, Money Saving Mom on Facebook.

We have limited eating out to every other month (this includes delivery and pick up). We use coupons and discounts when we can, we limit our trips to the store and go with lists. We walk to local destinations including the Library and work.

We have turned out thermostat down 2 more degrees during the day, hung more thermal curtains across dorrways we don’t use much in the winter to cut back on the draft, are hanging our clothes on racks instead of using the dryer, being more selective about what we buy at the grocery store, made changes to our phone coices to save money, and my husband gave up his subscription to xm radio in favor of free podcasts.

I have been working hard to try and save money. I am loving the challenge! I have been learning to cook from scratch, make my own laundry detergent, plan menus, avoid impulse shopping <~~ extremely hard to do! I love couponing! Just a few of the things off the top of my head that I have been able to save money on. I am always looking for new tips and tricks! I have "liked"/commented on SOM and have been member of MSM for awhile now. Thanks for the opportunity for all of us to be able to enter for a chance to receive The Money Saving Mom's Budget Book!

I am really trying to stick with the cash envelope system, be better about writing down all my purchases, and consume mostly vegetables from my own garden. I also started using baking soda only as a shampoo and it has been amazing and dirt cheap! Also, I already “like” moneysavingmom on facebook.

I am the mother of 3 and grandma to six! I am going to “upcycle” more. Instead of buying new things, I am going to remake, fix, or barter with friends. For example, I recently discovered I can make a cute pencil jean skirt for my granddaughter out of my daughters old jean legs or use the fabric and/or buttons from an old dress shirt to make a shirt for my grandson. Old t-shirts, dust rags. Kruig coffee cups, little seed starters for the garden that will save money too! My list goes on and on!

I’m trying to cut back on impulse buys. Quite honestly, I’m deleting emails with shiny offers and/or removing myself from the list to help with that. =)

Going to the grocery store *more* – I know it seems counter-intuitive, but I keep throwing out fruit that goes bad, so by planning on shopping for fruit twice a week instead of once I’ll end up throwing out less.
