As many of you know, I’m quite frugal in my approach to, well, EVERYTHING! I love clipping coupons, finding the best deals, and stretching my dollar as far has I can.
However, with Nora around, it’s a bit more challenging to make time to clip coupons and find every deal. I’m sure those of you with small children and/or busy lives can relate!
If you’ve ever wished you could spend less on groceries but still feed your family healthy, nutrutious meals, then today’s giveaway might be JUST what you’re looking for!
Karen McLaughlin from Abundance On A Dime wrote a cookbook, Cheap Appétit: The Complete Guide to Feeding Your Family for Less Than $400 a Month (While Eating Better Than You Ever Thought Possible) which includes over 125 kid-tested recipes using basic, inexpensive ingredients. Karen claims that the recipes and strategies inside her cookbook will help most families decrease their grocery budget by 40-60% *without* using coupons!!
Cheap Appétit will teach you:
- How to organize your pantry so you never buy food you don’t use again
- How to shop efficiently and on a weekly basis, reducing daily trips to the store
- What basic, inexpensive ingredients you need to always have on hand to make tasty, nutritious meals
- How to dramatically reduce your grocery bill, food wastage, and spoiled leftovers
- How to use everything you buy
- How to shop locally and make your local purchases last all year long
- How to stretch your food dollars and still eat healthy and delicious food
- How to easily do simple things, like bake your own bread, without a lot of time and effort

Our favorite cheap meal is white turkey chili. In a pinch it can be made with out the turkey. It can be made ahead of time, or on the stove, or in a crockpot. Love it!

Our favorite frugal meal is soup. I make a monster batch and portion it out into meal sizes for the freezer. Add some homemade artisan bread and I can easily feed my crowd of 6 for a few dollars total.

My favorite frugal meal is my mom’s spaghetti sauce. It makes 32 (!!!) servings and freezes well–so all I have to do is freeze it in 2-3 serving sizes and thaw it when we need a meal.

Hi Andrea,
My favourite frugal meal is Irish stew – and not just because I’m Irish! It uses cheaper cuts of meat and cheap vegetables and the length of time spent cooking really brings out the flavours beautifully. My Grandmother’s Irish Stew was the best I have ever tasted.

Favorite Summer Frugal Meal would have to be Zucchini Parmesan, because most everything except the pasta and breadcrumbs comes from our garden. (Zucchini, Tomatoes, Peppers, Onions for th sauce)
Favorite Winter Frugal Meal is “leftover soup” any leftover veggies and certain leftover meats get saved seperately in the freezer and when the mood strikes you dump it all together and add either tomato juice or stock and have a great flavorful soup.

Minestrone soup. I love going to the garden and throwing whatever I want together in a pot, with whatever meat is on sale, and some pasta. It is very cheap, super yummy, and makes a large amount.

One of our favorite frugal meals is quesadillas. I buy low-carb tortillas in a huge package at Sam’s, so I almost always have them on hand. You can put pretty much anything in them – leftover meat, veggies, rice – throw in a little cheese, and voila! A decent meal for next-to-nothing!

Omelets! Everything tastes good with eggs: leftover meats, veggies, beans, rice. Scramble it all together, and roll it up with a littl salsa. Yum!
Kelli says
I have a white chicken chili recipe that I can make a huge batch up for very little cost. And it’s fulling and full of protein so all I add is corn bread muffins and it’s super affordable.

Oooh, I hope I win! My family really tries to budget $400 a month so this would be awesome! It’s hard to think of creative recipies on $400/ month! My favorite cheap menu is breakfast burritos for dinner!

My favorite cheap dinner is black beans over brown rice with salsa, chopped veg (clean out crisper) with a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of cheddar. I make this about once a week for a meatless meal and basically a “free” dinner since it uses up the veggies I’d be tossing in a few days if they didn’t get eaten.
Heidi Helman says
I gave the wrong email to the comment above, oops!

My favorite frugal meal is a bag of egg noodles (cooked and drained)+can of rinsed pinto beans+can of mixed veggies+can of manwich (or other brand of sloppy joe sauce in a can). I love this because it doesn’t require any ingredients that go bad quickly or need much preparation so the components for this meal are something I always have in the cupboards.
I’m also very fond cooked rice+ can of rinsed black beans + can of green chilies + can of creamed corn + a few Tbsp of salsa. Again, the components for this meal can always be found in my cupboards as none of them go bad quickly or need a lot of prep. If I happen to have some on hand I might melt a little cheddar cheese on top or throw a little left over chicken into the rice.
