It must be “that time of year” — based on the number of emails and questions I’ve been getting lately, you must all be ready to organize your closets!
So, instead of answering every single email, comment, and Facebook message; I thought I would do a quick post with a bunch of links to different posts about organizing clothes.
These should keep you busy for awhile!!

And as you set out to organize and purge your clothes, please remember that clothes clutter is usually also “emotional clutter” — which means it can be difficult to get rid of.
Be honest with yourself…
- if it doesn’t fit, get rid of it
- if you don’t LOVE it, get rid of it
- if you don’t wear it, get rid of it {even if you did pay good money for it!}
- if it doesn’t make you feel great, get rid of it
- if your kids won’t wear it, get rid of it
- if you have 12 of the same thing, get rid of at least half of them
- if you are only keeping it because of emotional reasons, bite the bullet and just get rid of it
- if your best friend gave it to you but you don’t wear it, get rid of it
- if it’s been in your closet for more than 7 years, get rid of it
Ok, I think you get the idea 🙂
There are plenty of donation places that would LOVE your unused items… and I guarantee you’ll love all the extra closet space you have!

Your closets look amazing! Can you give any hints on how you fold all your t-shirts etc. so they stay in uniform stacks or lines. Mine always seem to be odd shapes and sizes. My drawers would greatly appreciate the help!

You inspired me!! Yesterday I took 2 FULL trash bags of clothes just from my dresser and closet to Goodwill, plus another overflowing box of random things. It made me very happy. 🙂 Thank you!!

Any advice on what to do with a letterman’s jacket? I am really good with everything else, but I keep going to throw it and then wonder if I’ll ever regret it. (I am also one of those people who wonder why people keep their huge wedding dresses, also… So that just shows you that I’m not opposed to getting rid of it!) Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

haha — this makes me laugh because my mom saved her letterman jacket too and we would always use it for dress-up when we were little! We also all used it for a Halloween costume at one point or another!
I would take a picture of you in it NOW, and then donate it {you could even donate it back to your school??}. If you’re not ready to part with it yet, then it’s probably just going to have to stay, and that’s OK too. I’m not against all sentimental clutter!
One more idea would be to take off all the patches, letters, and decals, and then just donate the jacket.

I’m thinking of establishing a family closet. We could move dressers and everything into it. The question, then, is this: what do you suggest the bedroom closets be used for? I don’t want to lose them entirely because I think it would diminish resale value (not everyone wants a family closet, after all).
Mara @ Super Savings says
You could use them as an office in an adult or guest room……the kids closets could be a reading nook or good for playing — like a puppet show area, or a place specifically for blocks or dolls.

I just cleaned out my clothing. It’s hard though when you’re preggers. You can’t go by fit. So I tossed everything I knew I wouldn’t wear style wise or by just too worn out. Sadly I’m like a dept store and can range my closet into 6 different sizes. After baby I’ve decided as I go down in size I’m tossing the entire size regardless how much I love each piece so that I don’t have any reason to fit back in them 😉

That sounds like an excellent idea Jennifer! Now that I’m completely “back to normal” and not wearing maternity clothes, I was definitely in the mood to purge many of my older clothes to make room for a few new purchases this spring!
