A couple weeks ago, I had a bunch of apples I wanted to use up because they were getting mushy and a little past their prime. I searched around for an apple bread recipe… and instead, decided on the following Apple Cake recipe.
It’s honestly the BEST apple cake/bread I’ve ever made! It tasted absolutely delicious plain {for breakfast} and with a dollop of whipped cream {for dessert}! And even though I cut out some of the fat by replacing half the oil with my homemade applesauce, this cake was still SO moist and very dense with a grand total of FIVE chopped up apples!
Recipe for The Best Apple Cake:
Ingredients
- 2 c. all-purpose flour
- 1/2 t. salt
- 1 T. ground cinnamon
- 1 T. baking powder
- 4 eggs
- 1 1/2 c. white sugar
- 1/2 c. vegetable oil
- 1/2 c. unsweetened applesauce
- 2 t. vanilla extract
- 5 apples — peeled, cored and sliced {I used Cortland apples, but most varieties should work}
- cinnamon and sugar to sprinkle over the top {optional}
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350* F .
- In a medium bowl, mix flour, salt, cinnamon, and baking powder. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, beat eggs and sugar on high speed until combined. Add in oil, applesauce, and vanilla.
- Add flour mixture and mix well.
- Fold in apples.
- Pour batter into a greased 9×13″pan.
- Sprinkle additional cinnamon and sugar over the top of the cake {optional}.
- Bake for 50 to 55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into center of cake comes out clean.
I think this might be my new “go-to” recipe for apples… I only wish I didn’t have to wait until next Fall to have a great selection of fresh Michigan apples!

Hi, Andrea! My husband was craving something ‘sweet, but not too sweet’ and I had minimum ingredients, but knew I could find something in your recipe box. I came across this recipe and tried it. LOVED it!! It was perfect for him!
I substituted the flour for wheat flour, and while it didn’t not look as visually appealing as your ‘pinterest worthy’ cake, it was still delicious!
Thank you for a great, easy to make on the spot dessert that satisfied the whole family!

yay — so glad he liked it! I’m actually going to a local orchard to get some apples tomorrow (they sell them through February) so maybe I’ll need to make this cake again!

In the oven as I type. I replaced 1.5 cups white sugar with 3/4 evaporated cane juice + 1/2 cup honey. Trying to reduce white sugar, but did add a bit to the sprinkling on top.
That pumpkin butter sub sounds delicious!!

Just pinned this — it sounds & looks delish! We always end up with apples around here that need to be used up quickly 🙂

Questions…
•1.5 c. white sugar…is this 1 and 5oz or 1 1.2 cups?
•1/2 cl unsweetened applesauce….what does cl mean?
Thank you

1.5 c. is probably 1½ cups
cl is probably a typo for c. (the “l” key is above the “full stop” key)
Also there is an “l” missing in the 4th step of the directions: “Add flour mixture …”
Can’t wait to try this recipe for Sunday dessert!

I can’t wait to try it and according to my Pinterest you’ve got a bunch more people that are thinking the same thing. Renea

Christina, I actually don’t like most traditional “cakes” either {except cheesecake of course!!} However, I LOVE this apples cake. I think it’s because it doesn’t have frosting… and is more like a bread even.
Glad your hubby liked it!
