As I mentioned on Tuesday, Dave and I have been working on a whole bunch of projects this summer — from relandscaping the majority of our yard, transforming our garage, working diligently on my digital photo albums, canning bunches of fruits, veggies, and jams… and so many other smaller projects.
One project we weren’t necessarily planning to tackle for another year or so is renovating our upstairs bedrooms. However, due to a recent and unexpected change of events, we’ll be needing the extra space in approximately 25 weeks 🙂
Yup, that’s right… baby Dekker #2 is on it’s way!
He or she is scheduled to arrive the first week of March (yes, we’re hoping to find out the gender in October and we’ll be sharing it on the blog.)
If this baby actually arrives relatively close to the due date (unlike our stubborn-from-before-she-was-born Miss Nora!) it should arrive right after Dave’s basketball season is over at the end of February, and right before Dave get’s a glorious 10-day spring break at the end of March — perfect timing right?
And in case you’re wondering, this pregnancy had nothing to do with my August blogging break. I made plans to take August off several months ago (for a variety of reasons listed in this post) and it just so happened that my blogging break coincided wonderfully with my less-energy-than-normal first trimester.
July was actually the worst month for me physically, but my body definitely appreciated the more relaxed pace of August.
Although Nora frequently tickles my belly and says “tica tica baby”, I don’t think she really understands yet.
However, she has been in love with “her baby” for months now… so after the initial shock of a new person vying for Mom’s attention passes (does that ever pass?) I know she’ll be an amazing big sister to our new baby!
No, I didn’t prompt the picture above — this is really what she does with her baby every day. She also changes the baby’s diaper (completely with baby powder) and puts the baby down for regular naps 🙂
Thanks for sharing in our excitement — there will be plenty more baby updates to come over the next few months.

Congratulations!! Just an encouragement, our little guy is 2 and we just welcomed a baby sister 3 days before his birthday in July. He is a mommas boy through and through! I was really worried about his reaction and he has been AMAZING! Kind, gentle, kissing, and loving on his sister whenever he can. I was expecting the worst but he has been phenomenal! The tantrums around other things have been horrible but with her, he is amazing! I hope Nora follows in his trail. Two littles is a lot of work but oh SO wonderful!!

Hi Andrea,
First of all congratulations on your new baby. I have been following your blog since last year and have gone through each and every post of yours. I love reading them everyday and wait for your posts so eagerly. I am also pregnant with due date for Feb first week. I used to go through your old pregnancy related posts and used to wish if I could get a daily update on them from you. And there you go:)….You came with this news at the prefect time like a saviour for me. Can’t wait for your future posts on your day to day activities during pregnancy and the likes.
Thanks a lot.

Congratulations! When we were expecting our second child, we talked about special things big sisters are/will be/can do. When she was born, we were careful to not say we couldn’t do something because I was nursing the baby or trying to put her down, but rather explained that “our hands are busy” so it somewhat eased that transition for the older one. It was easier to accept that our hands were busy than that we were busy! On the sly, I bought a craft bin and gradually filled it with special craft projects, art supplies, books, puzzles, etc. that my older daughter could use/do independently or with minimal assistance – it became our baby’s “gift” to her big sister, and that was a HUGE hit for the big sister! A whole special bin of new (or new to her) things – which were removed one at a time to help build suspense, surprise, and not let her know everything that was in there! She thought it was great that her baby sister had chosen such fabulous things to play with and do!
Best of luck as you progress through your pregnancy and expanding family!

YAY! I take back my comment yesterday about getting your body back to yourself. So glad you can share it with another baby!
Andrea says
haha — yup, that’s the first thing I thought of when I read your comment yesterday. This baby was also a HUGE reason we had to get Nora eating solid foods ASAP.
I haven’t had “my body to myself” for almost 3 years now… motherhood ๐

I feel you, Andrea! Mine are 18 months apart. I stopped nursing my first on his first birthday when I was three months pregnant. It’s exhausting. But for me baby number 2 is way easier.
Andrea says
I have a feeling that no matter how difficult the next baby is — it will be A LOT easier for me too. Can you believe I had never ever changed a diaper before Nora? Seriously, Dave and I had no idea what we were doing with Nora. At least now we’ll have over 2 years of experience ๐
