Our New Closet!!

posted by Andrea | 06/20/2011

This past week, while all my birthday giveaways were stealing the show; Dave and I were busy working on our house renovations.

We crossed a TON of things off our to-do list and I can honestly say that we seem to be rounding the final corner and headed for home!!! I can not wait for these projects to be finished.

One of the main projects that I’m so excited to show you is our brand new master closet.

But before you get too excited, let me show you the “BEFORE” pictures::

VERY purple walls, bluish-grey carpet, horrible mirrored closet doors, and 2 really small closets with a wall in between.

We took those nasty doors off and ripped up the carpet within a week of moving.

We also disassembled the horribly broken and rickety closet systems that were already in place and knocked down the dividing wall to make one larger closet.

We’ve made a ton of progress in our master bedroom… but I don’t want to give too much away, so today I’m just focusing on the closet!

So… here are a few picture of the new closet::

This is exactly what it looks like now, after ORG West Michigan installed our new closet system. Obviously, we still need floors, baseboard… and clothes, but isn’t is pretty!!

Inside the closet we have short hang on the left {Dave gets the top, I get the bottom}. Large shelves down the middle and across the top. Long hang is on the right and we’ll both share that space.

I love that the closet system sits off the ground, leaving plenty of space for shoes {not that we have a lot of shoes or anything!}

As you notice, we have double French Doors on our closet — not bi-fold doors. Not only to the French Doors look amazing, but they also give us lots more room to access our closet, and since they are solid wood doors, we can install hooks for belts, ties, scarves, etc.

The light inside our closet will also be nice if one of us has to get up earlier than the other and find our clothes.

And here’s a closer look at the inside:

Even though our “Master Closet” is not a huge walk-in closet, it is still amazing how much more storage space we have with this quality closet system.

I actually measured all of our clothing to see how many inches of short hang, long hang, and shelves we would need and ORG West Michigan turned that into a custom closet that would accommodate all our needs in the limited space we had.

And now for some of my favorite “Custom Features”::

The pull-out valet rod was all Dave’s idea. He wanted to have a separate space to hang his ironed clothes for the next day.

The TV / cable hook up was also Dave’s idea since he has always wanted a TV in our bedroom — but I refuse to have one sitting out! So we compromised {as good married couple should do!} and opted for a “hidden” TV in the closet. This will be perfect since our bed will be directly across from the closet!

The pull-out mirror was my idea because I like to look in a full-length mirror — but I didn’t want to ruin our door by hanging a mirror on the back. So, ORG West Michigan installed a pull-out mirror that only takes up about 3″ of space when not in use. Pretty cool!

I’ll be showing LOTS more pictures once we actually move in to our new room and start using our new closet — but I just wanted to give you a quick closet update! Isn’t it such a VAST improvement on what used to be there??

Oh, and in case you’re looking for a little more closet inspiration, head on over to ORG West Michigan’s website and check out their amazing line of quality closet designs.

I think our next project might have to be the garage!!

Doesn’t this photo just make to drool?

Thanks to ORG West Michigan for our gorgeous master closet!!

What about you… what closet or space is most in need of a custom makeover?

Andrea, I know it’s been a while since you did this project, but how much did it cost to design and re-do your closet? I’m looking for ideas and scouting prices so we can re-do ours. Thanks for any info you can give. My husband is very handy and I know he can do it himself but I’m wondering if we need to hire someone who can design it for us.

I love your closet! We are wanting to transform our current closet into something like what you did! It is nice to see a “real” person’s finished closet! Our current closet has the closet maid “stuff” – one level we can reach and hang things and the other one is so high – I am not sure what previous owners were thinking! Anyway, we would like to put all of our clothing in our closet and not need a dresser…we are working on the plans and layout, so I will definitely check out the link that you provided! Thanks!

Looks fabulous! I’m super jealous. 😉

Okay, I’m turning a little green with envy. We have a similar closet (to the old version of yours). Adding shelving would make organization much easier. It may be time for a closet update for us as well!

That is a HUGE improvement, and I love the little sneak peeks of the trim around the window and the new wall color. That room is going to look AMAZING! Can’t wait to see the whole thing!

I can’t wait to show you the whole thing… but we still need to install the floors and finish painting the doors.

    Just a few more weeks!!

Lookin’ GREAT, Andrea! I like all the additional trim you’re putting on your openings, too.

So tricky Brenda — I was trying my best to hide all the other details from the camera. You’re just too perceptive!

But yes, I can’t wait to show all the beautiful trim we have now!!

When I first saw the link on facebook the picture that displayed beside the post was the before, and for a SPLIT second I thought that was the after of the room! 🙂

Congratulations on the beautiful new closet. I totally get how exciting that is!

haha — yes I realized the “Before” picture would come up first on Facebook, but I just felt like you couldn’t really appreciate the new closet without gazing in horror at the old closet!!

So, I’m glad you kept reading 🙂

Wow! What a transformation. I never would have thought you could get such a great looking closet out of such a small space. Love what you did! I am enjoying all the step-by-step reveals of your beautiful farmhouse. Can’t wait to see the pics of it all completed someday.
