I’m always an advocate for borrowing something versus buying something whenever possible. Not only do we save money by borrowing, we also save so much space in our home by not storing things we don’t need on a regular basis. Plus, I personally feel like borrowing (and lending) are great excuses to be helpful and interact with others.
The only “issue” is that I need to remember to return these borrowed items — and I often have to gently remind friends to return my items! Thankfully, I have a relatively simple method I use to remind myself what I still need to return as well as what items I’m currently lending out.

How do you remember to return?

I love your ideas! Hope you don’t mind if I share a link to your site from mine. I’m an organizer who is new to blogging. Thanks for the great ideas.

I haven’t borrowed anything in a long time but was thinking that one way to remember to return an item is to schedule a dinner, playdate or even just desserts with the other family two to three weeks later. It is reminder to return and a Thank you all in one. It would be written on the family calendar so no need for a separate piece of paper.

This is a great idea Carrie — and it would work in many situations. The only time I’m thinking it might not work would be for borring baby clothing (which we do a lot of!) We usually borrow or lend clothing in 3-6 month increments, and it can be tricky to keep track of what clothing comes from what family when it all gets mixed together in the wash and when we have it for several months at a time. In these situations, it’s helpful for me to write things down so I don’t forget to return someone else’s baby clothes.
