Right around the middle of August, I start to feel “done” with summer… this year is no exception. We’ve had a record-breaking hot summer and I’m DONE with the heat, DONE with the humidity, and ready for the cooler fall temperatures to arrive.
On a more positive note… we picked an awesome summer to get a brand new air conditioning unit installed! And I’m SO glad we finally purchased a portable AC unit for Simon’s bedroom as his room has always been much hotter than the rest of the house, even with the whole-house air running.
With his new portable AC unit, his room stays nice and cool for naps and sleeping at night — no more sweaty Simon (at least not when he’s sleeping!)
Most years, we can use the same air filter from late spring through early fall because we rarely run our HVAC system from May through October… but this summer, I’ve been faithfully changing out our filters on a regular basis because the AC has been running constantly!
In most homes, changing your air filters is an important chore that’s easy to forget about. This chore is even more difficult for me due to the fact that our HVAC system requires a very odd-sized filter, making it hard to find the right filters. In fact, I only know of ONE place in town to buy the filters we need, and they are expensive.
I understand that changing the filters regularly can help extend the life of our furnace and air conditioner, and it can reduce the amount of dust and allergens in our home… but my frugal personality just hates spending so much on furnace filters!
NOTE: did you know that if you can see a big difference between your clean and dirty filters, you’ve actually waited too long to change the filter? I didn’t realize this — but when we got our new AC unit installed, the guy said we really should change our filters BEFORE they look dirty and dusty, because by the time they actually look dirty, they are forcing the HVAC system to work much harder.
Anyway, we spent a lot of money on our new air conditioning unit, so I’m willing to change out the filters more often… especially since I’ve been using the super convenient FilterEasy filter delivery service for the past year!
FilterEasy can make almost any size filter (even our crazy size filters), and they are the cheapest place I’ve found to buy our filters.
Plus, since FilterEasy is an automatic online process (with free shipping) I never need to remember to change my filters — I just put the new filter in whenever it arrives on my front porch!
One less thing I need to worry about forgetting these days (and I’m so thankful for that!)
Thanks to the very simple FilterEasy ordering process, it’s easy to choose the quantity, type, and size of filter I need… and then I can forget all about it! When it shows up on my front porch, I know it’s time to change my filter. Other than that, I never ever need to think about it.

The air filter in our unit is so awkward to change. I also put it on my calendar with a reminder to change the filter at 90 days but I probably should change it more frequently since we live in the desert and have a dog. These filters are actually a few dollars than I pay at Lowe’s but the added convenience of having them delivered makes up for the cost difference.

Thanks so much Andrea! I’m all for anything that saves me time. I have a terrible memory and can’t remember what size I need when I’m at the home improvement store and then I forget all about it until the next time I’m there!

We change ours monthly! We have open land around us in the high desert of NV…..My brother-in-law is a HVAC specialist and he says the best thing to do is buy the cheapest filters and change them every single month. We have both central heat and a/c. Great giveaway!! Thx
Andrea says
yes, we always buy the cheapest filters too (but they are still expensive because of our weird size).

Just set up a subscription–I am terrible about remembering to change the filters, but since we moved into a house with a new HVAC system, I want it to be in good shape for as long as possible! Thanks for the tip and discount!
Andrea says
Yes, a new HVAC system is super expensive to replace — much more than a few filters!

We upgraded from the swamp cooler to refrigerated air this year too! So expensive but after our hot summer it’s already been worth the money!
My son still sleeps sweaty. The swim teacher recommended satin pillow cases to wick that moisture away from his ears but I haven’t tried it yet. Just a side thought about sweaty little boys.
Andrea says
Thanks for this tip Michelle — I will definitely look into those pillow cases for Simon!

When you first introduced Filter Easy last year, I signed up for a free air filter. My husband and I are terrible about changing the filter. It’s up in our hallway ceiling, so we never look up and think about the filer. Usually our air conditioner ended up freezing up at least one a year. It was horrible. When I got my shipment from Filter Easy, the quality was amazing for the low cost. I continued with the subscription, and we have gone an entire summer without our air conditioner freezing up. Our filter has been changed more this year than in the past 5 years. I get home from work and there is a box on my door step with my air filter. We immediately change it, and we are finished until next time one arrives. No more trying to remember to pick one up at the store, when we finally do remember to change the filter. Filter Easy has changed our lives. Thank you, Andrea for introducing it to us last year!! 🙂

yay! This is so awesome to here — thanks for sharing Ally!
I’m so glad you are benefiting from your FilterEasy filter deliveries — it’s so great because they always offer free shipping and their prices are cheaper than I can find at our local stores. It’s a win-win all the way around in my opinion!
Also, I have a feeling we’re both saving some on our energy costs since our HVAC systems aren’t working so hard and can “breathe” through their clean filters!
Ally says
I can definitely tell my HVAC system isn’t struggling like it use to. I was seriously surprised that they are cheaper than my local places and the quality is amazing. Especially since I have animals in the house. I also enjoy the free shipping.
Thank you again!!

Thanks, Andrea! I have an odd size, too, and I just ran out of the supply that was left by the folks who renovated my house.
My trick to remember is that my dog gets his heartworm chew on the 15th, so that’s when I check the filter. Apparently that’s when I’m supposed to change it, even when it looks clean!
Andrea says
That’s a great trip Donna!
Also, I believe FilterEasy recommends changing the filters every OTHER month. You could probably get away with going 3 months if you aren’t using it much (like in the spring and fall for us) but it’s amazing how much better and more efficient your furnace and AC units are with clean filters!
FilterEasy says
Hi Andrea & Donna,
Changing your air filters is dependent on several different factors: your location, your AC unit, number of pets, if you have allergies, etc. For example, you will likely run your AC unit all year long if you live in Florida, meaning you should definitely be changing your filter more than those who live up north!
Please reach out to us at Hello@FilterEasy.com and we’ll be happy to help you determine the schedule that fits best with your situation! 🙂

When we purchased our home a little over a year ago, our home inspector instructed us every 3 months. I have a little trick, since we get our water bill about every 3 months, I change the filter every time we get a water bill!
Andrea says
This is a great tips Mara! I’ve also heard every 2-3 months is a good goal to change out your filters. I can’t tell you how many times I went SOOOOOOOOO much longer than this before I found FilterEasy! I always forgot. One time it was almost a year before I remember! oops!
