As we near the end of December, I can’t help but get excited for a fresh start at the beginning of the New Year!
I love breaking out my new planner (I’ll share more on this after January 1) and flipping through the blank pages just waiting to be filled. I love packing up all the Christmas things and purging decorations I didn’t use. And I love the fact that the beginning of every New Year is often PRIME TIME for decluttering and organizing my home.
The cold weather often keeps us inside, the busyness of the back-to-school and holiday seasons have passed, and the kids have new toys, books, games, and movies to occupy them (which frees up more time for me to focus on our home).
As many of you know, organizing is one of my most favorite “hobbies”, so the first few months of every New Year are quite enjoyable for me as I often allot more time in my daily and weekly schedules for these extra decluttering and organizing projects.
I know how weird this might seem to some of you — especially those of you who don’t particularly love cleaning and organizing — but I truly feel like I could spend several hours every single day on various organizing projects and never tire of it!

I’m so glad you posted this. Personally, I’m on my third go-round. I always am gone for the start — so it goes this time too BUT! It can be done in 15 minute at a time so even getting behind is really no big deal, seriously. The secret is DO NO OBSESS. One thing I learned from you years ago was if it doesn’t look dirty don’t clean it. And that organized storage tends to stay that way and cluttered spaces attract more clutter. I worked with my mom on this back when it was 40 weeks and here’s a great example of her approach. We did the tableware / flatware drawer. This was a series of really easy steps. Put a towel on the counter. Empty the drawer on the towel. Make a bowl of soapy water, wipe the drawer inside and out and wash out the silverware tray. Hers was pretty cluttered with junk like rubber bands, twist ties, free plastic silverware from takeout, a comb, some screws a and a magnifying mirror. I got her a amazon.com box and told her to put silverware in drawer. Put everything else in the box and put it in the garage. Since she relied on family to take care of donations we set the boxes aside to sort later. Yes, we had an small pile of boxes stacked in the corner of her 3 car garage (with no cars in it) but the kitchen, over a week or two was completely organized and things put where they belonged, logically. For a severely visually impaired person this was critical. It only took me 15 minutes each day. It’s not been so easy for me because a lot of the stuff I have to deal with now is not mine.
I recommend this highly — it’s worth every single penny and you have it for a lifetime. Heaven help me if I need it a 4th time. Thanks for introducing us to Lisa way back when.
