Happy New Year from cold, snowy, icy West Michigan!
You might think the photo below is black and white, but that’s just how dark and dreary our weather is right now. At least we know the sun will come back again this spring… ☀️
As I look back on 2024, there were lots of small “highs” and a few “lows”, but it honestly wasn’t a monumental year for our family (other than Dave switching schools).
No new babies or pets. No big home renovations or yard projects. No new business ventures. No noteworthy changes at church or home. No tragedies, illnesses, or big setbacks. No milestones or huge achievements.
There were times during the year when the mundaneness of our everyday lives left me feeling antsy (wash, rinse, repeat x 365)… but for the most part, it was a fantastic year of simply enjoying the home and yard we already renovated, the friends we already have, the business we already built, and the glorious “everydayness” of life at home with 4 fairly independent and fun kiddos.
I had a few Galatians 6:9 moments last year when I realized how often we were “reaping the harvest” after many years of continually pouring into our home, family, church, work, and community.
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9
This is not to say we’re on auto-pilot from here on out, but I do think it’s good to notice and enjoy the fruits of our labor instead of constantly looking ahead at how much more we could and should do.
Do I have big goals and dreams for 2025?
Honestly, no.
I have a few personal and financial goals in the back of my mind (and in my planner — you know I need to write them down somewhere!), but I’m holding them loosely because they aren’t that important to me right now.
That said, Dave and I have been thinking and dreaming about how we might renovate our outbuilding into a more welcoming place for larger groups to gather, or even a place for guests to stay. We’d love to start that project this year, but we don’t have definite plans yet.
Do you have any goals or dreams for 2025? Feel free to share them in the comments below or shoot me an email!
Favorite Moment = A Free Week
Dave and the kids got 2 full weeks off of school, which probably means they go longer somewhere else, but it’s worth it to have 2 full weeks off during the holidays.
The first week was somewhat busy with Christmas parties, church services, making food, etc. But the second week was basically a “free week” for our family — no parties, no activities, no special events, nothing extra unless we wanted to do something extra.
This year, we enjoyed doing very little of anything extra from Sunday, December 29, through Saturday, January 4. It was amazing!
Yes, there were times when the kids got grumpy because they were a little bored, but for the most part, we enjoyed sleeping in, eating big breakfasts at 10:00, playing in the snow, eating leftover goodies and treats, playing with new Christmas gifts, doing puzzles, reading books, playing games, watching Christmas movies, using Christmas gift cards to go out to eat, and staying up until midnight on New Year’s Eve for the first time ever (at least for the kids).
It was a wonderful “free week” that allowed us rest and relax before launching back into our work and school routines this week.
Favorite Routine = Bedtime
There is so much talk about how important bedtime routines are for babies and children… but I argue they are essential for grownups too. 😉
Whenever I reach my “stopping point” in the evening, after the kids are in bed, after I’ve cleaned up the kitchen, and after I’ve finished everything I need/want to finish for the day, I do 3 things:
- make my to-do list for the next day
- take a very hot shower
- read in bed
It’s a fairly simple routine that helps me wind down, relax, and fall asleep quickly. I’ve done this every night for as long as I can remember (way back to high school and college).
Also, it’s worth noting that I rarely start the routine at the same time each night (a routine doesn’t necessarily need to be bound to a certain time or timeframe).
There are some nights when I hop in the shower at 8:15 and read for an hour or more. Other nights, I don’t get in the shower until 11:30 and only read for 5 minutes.
When our kids were younger, I often joked that they would eventually learn to love their bedtime routines… and honestly, none of our kids resist going to bed anymore. In fact, over Christmas break, we had to incentivize them to stay up later a few nights because they wanted to go to bed — who would have thought!
My “grownup bedtime routine” is one of my favorite routines year-round, but especially on cold winter nights.

Past Favorite = USA Pans
I’ve sung the praises of USA Pans for many years… but since I just purchased a new USA Pan over Christmas break, I wanted to highlight them again, in case you’ve never tried them before.
These pans are the best if you’re looking for non-stick bakeware that won’t flake off into your food. They are a bit of an investment but very worth it (in my opinion, after using them for nearly a decade).
Not only are they made right here in the USA, they are also super-duper non-stick (food just slides out of them) and very heavy-duty (they are commercial quality).
These pans conduct heat well for even baking and they clean up exceptionally well (note: they aren’t supposed to go in the dishwasher).
I use a USA Pan almost every day — probably multiple per day for the last decade and continue to speak highly of them to anyone who asks (and even those who don’t ask!)

Over the last several years, I’ve slowly replaced most of my non-stick bakeware with USA Pan brand bakeware and I don’t regret a single purchase.
I now own the following USA Pan items:
- 2 XL sheet pans
- 2 quarter sheet pans (they fit perfectly in our favorite toaster oven!)
- a 9″ x 13″ pan
- a 9″ x 9″ pan
- an 8″ x 8″ pan
- 2 one-pound loaf pans
- 4 mini loaf pans
- 2 round cake pans (9″)
My next purchase will likely be the bundt pan or the 12-cup muffin tins.
If you’re looking to start a USA Pan collection (or if you need to buy a fantastic wedding gift), I’d suggest this 6-piece starter set or visit the USA Pan store (that could be dangerous!)
Favorite Clothing = New Boots
It had been many years since I purchased new winter gear for myself… and weirdly enough, my feet shrunk after Clara was born, so I’ve been wearing the same pair of too-big boots for at least 7 years. 😬
A few months ago, I got a coupon and gift card to Dicks Sporting Goods… and although my first instinct was to purchase something for the kids, I saw that they sold boots, and decided to look around.
I happened to find a really cute pair of Sorel (youth) boots on clearance, and snatched them up for only $32 after my $20 coupon! Not exactly thrift-store pricing, but thanks to my gift card, they were free to me!
Here’s the link to the women’s sizes on Amazon.
So far, I’m a big fan as they are very easy to slip on and off, they keep my feet warm and totally dry, they coordinate with most of my outfits, and they aren’t big and clunky (I love the shorter ankle boot style).
I’ve gotten many compliments when I wear them… and they fit Nora too!
Favorite Book = All Our Secrets
I read a whopping 7 fantastic books over Christmas Break (all printed, no eBooks).
My favorite was a new one by Lynn Austin (a favorite author of mine) entitled, All My Secrets. It follows the writing patterns she is well-known for — weaving multiple generational stories together, constantly going back in time and coming into the present, integrating faith into every message, and throwing a few curveballs in at the end.
I also read her follow-up Christmas novella, Waiting for Christmas, with the same characters and a continuing story plot.
Both were hard to put down.

Favorite Splurge = Carwash Membership
We purchased a new-to-us minivan last year and it’s the “newest” new-to-us vehicle we’ve ever had.
Michigan winters are hard on vehicle paint jobs with all the salt on the roads, so we decided to “splurge” on a carwash membership over the winter.
It’s SOOOOOO nice!
The carwash is just down the road so I regularly get our van washed 2-3 times each week.
If you live near a Tommy’s Car Wash, you can get your first month free when you sign up here.

Favorite Cosmetic = Coconut Oil
I’ve used coconut oil in the kitchen for many years — often in place of vegetable oil or melted butter for a variety of recipes.
I’ve also used it to make sugar scrubs for sloughing off dead skin.
More recently, due to a crazy rash I couldn’t get rid of, I switched to using coconut oil for all my lotion and moisturizers. I now keep a container of it in the bathroom and use it exactly as I would my previous body lotion and face cream.
I thought it would be too greasy, but it quickly absorbs into my skin and Dave insists I don’t smell like coconut. 😉 Also, my rash went away after a week of using exclusively coconut oil!
As an added bonus, coconut oil is CHEAP compared to most moisturizers and facial creams.
If you’re looking for a good-for-your-skin moisturizer that won’t break the bank, give coconut oil a try and let me know what you think.

Favorite Recipe = BBQ Chicken Chili
This BBQ Chicken Chili recipe is a fun twist on traditional chili… perfect for cold winter weeknights when you need a quick meal to feed lots of hungry mouths.
You can spice it up a bit by adding more “heat” (my version is fairly tame), and we love adding lots of fresh garnishes like cheese, sour cream, cilantro, green onions, etc.

I shared the post below in 2023… which is why it has 23 tips.
These tips are still very relevant now in 2025 — I’ll add two more for an even 25:
24. Declutter Seasonally — I just purged all our gift wrap and Christmas decor as I was putting it away. If you stay on top of things seasonally, you’ll eventually get through all your seasonal items each year.
25. Create a Holding Bin — for items you’re not sure if you can declutter yet, put them in a box or bin, date it, and put it in the basement or storage closet. If you don’t need the items for 4-6 months, you can likely donate them.

“enjoy the fruits of our labor instead of constantly looking ahead at how much more we could and should do.” ❤️
I just added All My Secrets to Audible–thank you! I am currently reading The Strength of His hands from the library.
Lounge Time is my new favorite part of our routine. Even though we homeschool and are home all morning, it’s very different than just hanging out. So after lunch, we all hang out in the living room. I set a timer for 15 minutes where we don’t talk but are in the room together. I struggled as a talkative kid to be able to just hang out without talking. I get to read for 15 minutes without interruptions. Then we just all hang out doing either our own thing but in the same room or sometimes doing things together. My kids love this, too! Then we are ready for our afternoon activities.

Instead of doing a New Year’s resolution that is good for the whole year, I’ve decided to do monthly resolutions that are good for one month. In January, I’m doing a dry January and no desserts. In February, I am going to commit to updating my estate plan. Each month I will choose a new thing. Thinking of one month at a time is easier for me than thinking about doing anything for twelve months.
Andrea says
Yes, I love this idea Linda! I’ve actually heard of a few people who do the monthly goals versus yearly goals. It sounds a lot more manageable (and you’ll likely have a higher success rate too!)
Thanks for sharing this so others can maybe hop on this trend too!
Jennifer says
Love your posts, Andrea! What are your favorite cooking pans? Do you use only cast iron?
Andrea says
Thanks Jennifer!
I have 3 cast iron frying pans (8″, 10″, 12′) that I use daily for most of my cooking (stovetop and oven). I also have an enameled cast iron Dutch oven for soups, roasts, etc.
And then I have 3 stainless “sauce pans” (1.5 qt, 3 qt, and 4 qt) for boiling noodles, making gravy, melting chocolate, etc.
This conglomeration of non-matching pans has worked well for our family for many years now!

It’s funny you mention about your van! I was just thinking of y’all as we were looking at Pacifica’s and I was wondering if yours was still going – I remember how much you loved it! Would love to know which van you bought recently, we’re in the market for a new to us one as well!
Andrea says
Too funny, Lindsey!
We actually purchased the EXACT same van (same black color too) just 12 years newer!
It was previously called the Town and Country, but now it’s a Pacifica. It has all the same great stow ‘n go seating and lots of fun upgrades too (hello, heated steering wheel and air conditioned seats!)
We’re super happy with our purchase… but we honestly didn’t even look at any other vans to see if we liked them better. We found a good deal and knew we liked this brand so we went with it!

I love our USA pans too! We use them daily at our house.
Just wanted to share my experience with coconut oil as a moisturizer. My husband has used it for years and loves it. But it actually dries my skin out very badly. I have since learned that some skin types do love coconut oil but not all skin types. There are other oils or butters that work well for me, but coconut oil is NOT one of them. Just thought I’d share that in case any other readers experience the same thing.
Andrea says
yay for another USA Pan lover!
Interesting about the coconut oil — I’m curious to know what “other” oils and butters work best for you. I’d be interested in trying them as well 🙂

Thanks Suzanne — yes, check out the USA Pans the next time you need to update your kitchen items. They are so great!
Thanks for your loyal readership!

My feet shrunk a little after having children too! I used to be an 8.5 or 9 and now I’m an 8 or 8.5. So strange!
Andrea says
yeah, I’m at a 7.5 now (sometimes even a 7) after being a solid size 8 since high school. So crazy!

I love your blog! At 70 years of age, I still find so many great ideas! Bought a new USA pan last week! And I may hint to my husband about those boots for my birthday next week! They’d be great for shoveling! Praying for you and your family today!
Beth
Andrea says
Thanks so much, Beth 🙂
And happy birthday (next week). Hope you get the boots!

Thanks to you, I also LOVE USA Pans and recommend them frequently! I have gotten several baking pans for each of our daughters/daughters in law for their bridal showers, too. They’re a great gift to give with a family cookbook that I’ve compiled for them. I have found many of my USA pans at TJ Maxx/Home Goods/Marshalls. Sometimes, you have to dig for them, but they are lots cheaper if you can find them there!
We were in GR for a wedding the weekend before Christmas, and it was SO COLD. Our southern bodies aren’t used to 10 degrees and snow anymore, but we enjoyed it for a few days then happily flew home to our 40-degree weather!
Happy 2025 to the Dekkers!
Andrea says
oh yay — not surprising that you love the USA Pans since we’re basically the same person — LOL! 🙂
I rarely go to the stores you mentioned, but I will have to think about that the next time I’m in the area (they are right by our Costco).
Hope you enjoyed GR for the wedding — and yes, it’s COLD (it was 11º this morning!) Glad you can be in warmer weather now!
Have a great week, Jen!
