Summer is the season for weddings… and for anniversaries (at least in our families.) Dave and I celebrated 10 years in June, my parents celebrated 35 years in July, and Dave’s parents will celebrate 36 years later this month!
Nora loves flipping through our wedding album and trying to guess who is who 10 years later — and she recently saw this picture of Dave’s parents’ wedding and immediately pointed out that “Papa’s hair wasn’t white when he got married” 🙂
Speaking of Dave’s parents’ wedding anniversary, we decided to give them an early “anniversary-type gift” and finally digitize hundreds of old family pictures (something his mom has wanted to do for years) with the help of Legacybox.
As some of you might remember, we gave my parents a Legacybox for Christmas and they used it to digitize a bunch of old family VHS tapes along with many of their older photos. We were so happy with the results that we figured it was time for Dave’s parents to give it a try too!
.
What is Legacybox?
Legacybox is a brand that preserves all your outdated memories — from VHS tapes to Super 8 film and more!
The kit and instructions are very user-friendly and include everything you need — including round-trip shipping, a crush-proof box, and personal concierge service so you can talk with an expert at any time.
They have a quick turnaround time — usually just a few weeks — and their barcoding and online order tracking ensures your memories stay safe throughout the entire process.
Also, they have the BEST tagline — “forever, made simple.” — it just fits their service so well.
The whole process is so simple and straightforward — the only hard part is narrowing down your pictures to the few hundred you want to digitize!
Once you decide what pictures you want to send in, simply put them in bags of 25, place the included barcode stickers on each bag, put the photos in the box, and ship with the included pre-paid postage label.
The second hardest part is waiting for the digitized media to return — thankfully it only takes a few weeks for piles of pictures to be neatly consolidated and copied onto CDs or a USB drive!
Of course, you get all the originals back as well — along with the super sturdy Legacybox storage box, which is a great way to store your original copies if you choose to keep them all.
When we got our photos back, I immediately copied everything to our portable hard drive before giving the box to Dave’s parents. Now we both have a digital copy of everything.
Here’s a peek at some of our preserved memories.
These are just a few of the old pictures Dave’s parents had. The young couple in the middle is Dave’s dad’s parents — Dave’s Grandpa, Simon Dekker, is who our Simon is named after (read more on that here).
These old, faded pictures are my favorites — I’m so glad we were able to preserve them.
This little cutie is Dave, around 6 months old — do you see any resemblance with our kids?
These 2 pictures are Dave and his sister with their grandparents.
For some reason, this photo of Dave on his bike was one of my top favorites from the hundreds of pictures we digitized.
And this is the big red barn on his parent’s property back in Washington.
It was so fun for me to scroll through all of Dave’s family’s old pictures and hear some of the stories that went along with the photos!

I wonder if there is a Canadian equivalent? Legacybox doesn’t ship to Canada sadly! ๐

oh bummer — I’m not sure about that. Sorry!

Hi Andrea :). If I purchase this as a Christmas gift for my parents, are they able to fill the box themselves with the memories they want preserved? Just wondering if I recieve the box, hold on to it until Christmas and then give it to them. Will they have plenty of time to get everything together to send in?
Thanks!!
Andrea says
Yes, you can purchase it now, give them the box, let them fill it, and return it whenever it works for them!

Thanks Andrea! I didn’t get around to using your discount code last time you posted about Legacy Box. Pleasant surprise to see another opportunity. ๐ I just ordered two kits. Christmas shopping for my folks and aunt and uncle done! I love to Christmas shop early. Woohoo!
I love seeing Dave’s old family photos. You’re right, that bike pic is a classic! It has just the right combo of colors, cuteness and not too awkward vintage fashion. I love the Washington apples T-shirt too, since I grew up in Washington state (live in Oregon now). I can’t believe how long I read your blog and didn’t realize Dave was from my home state until your recent post about him. Fun! I know I’m biased, but I think Pacific Northwesterners are a special breed (in the best sense possible, hehe).
Andrea says
Good, that’s what I was hoping for. There were a handful of people who emailed me asking for another discount code, so I was happy when Legacybox asked to do another post with me. I’m sure your relatives will be thrilled with their Christmas gifts this year!
And yes, Dave grew up in Washington his entire life (up until he met me in college!)

That’s awesome! I love looking at family photos, especially old ones. It’s neat to see pictures of Dave as a child because I generally think the kids look more like you, but you can really see how much they resemble Dave too! In the picture of him on the bike, in particular, I can see Nora.
And that photo of the barn with the old gas pump – amazing! Love it!
Andrea says
I know — that barn photos is frame-worthy!

I need to do this for me but it’s also such a great gift idea! I’m going to put this on my Christmas gift list.
Andrea says
Definitely a great Christmas gift!

I had kids before digital, so you can only imagine how many albums and videos I have! I had every intention on transferring them myself one day, but this looks like a great service and worth the money. Considering that my youngests (twins) are 18, I should stop believing I will ever get to it!
Do you like the quality and resolution they use? Do you know if they do any enhancements to the old pics and videos?
Andrea says
haha — you can always just start now and not worry about the pictures from the past. Even just moving forward, it might be fun to have a digital album — but yes, Legacybox can certainly help with any old photos you want to digitize ๐
as for the quality and resolution — I was happy with it, but I don’t think they do any enhancements. So if your photos are really blurry or faded, they will still be blurry and faded once they are digital. Hope this helps!

We have hundreds of old slides that I have wanted to get digitized. I assume you need to know how many items you will want to digitize at the time of the order? Thanks for the discount code!
Andrea says
They have different size packages — so you would need to know ROUGHLY how many you want — their biggest box is up to 500 pictures or slides, but when the box arrives, they offer additional labels for 50% off, so you can add on a couple hundred more pictures once the box arrives if you have more than you originally thought.

Andrea – It looks like their website is having technical difficulties. I have tried three times to place an order and can’t get pass the shipping info screen. :- (
Andrea says
i’ll contact them right now and have them look into it. It’s possible the site is overloaded with traffic or people trying to check out. Maybe try later today (the offer is good for at least a week I think!)

Nora and James have his eyes and Simon definitely has his face shape. His genes are strong! Love the pic of him on his bike….so cute! Of course, your genes are strong as well…Simon’s eyes! I love old family photos. It feels good to look at ancestors and see resemblances. ๐
Andrea says
yes, Nora and James DEFINITELY have the same eyes (and they look a lot like Dave’s — and his sister’s eyes too). And Simon DEFINITELY has my eyes ๐
Karen says
I’m going to do this for my mom for Christmas. Thanks for the idea!
Andrea says
this would be an awesome Christmas gift!
