Homemade Slow Cooker Refried Beans

posted by Andrea | 06/19/2019 | 27 comments

Although I was originally intimidated by the seemingly long process of soaking, draining, rinsing, and slow cooking dried beans, I quickly realized it only requires a few minutes of hands-on work for a HUGE amount of homemade refried beans!

In my opinion, they taste significantly better than canned beans, and they freeze really well!

Not only does it taste great, it requires virtually no prep work of any kind, and there is almost no clean up!

Baked Potatoes 101

Dave and I are huge potato fans — and since potatoes are one of the very few things Nora will actually eat, we eat potatoes A LOT. Nora’s favorite is mashed potatoes, but Dave and I are pretty big on baked potatoes — specifically loaded baked potatoes.

Today, I’m sharing a bunch of different ways to bake potatoes, our favorite potato toppings, and how we use baked potato leftovers.

Hot Fruit Salad (in the Slow Cooker)

Fruit salad… in a slow cooker? Yes, you read that right — and it is one of my all-time favorite fruit salad recipes!

It’s so simple and uses mostly non-perishable canned fruits, so you can always keep the ingredients on hand for a last-minute side dish.

Slow Cooker Sweet n’ Sour Pork

posted by Andrea | 08/2/2012 | 20 comments

A few weeks ago, I tried one of our favorite recipes, Sweet n’ Sour Pork, in the slow cooker. I used exactly the same ingredients as I normally do, but instead of cooking it for 3 hours in the oven, I cooked it for 6 hours on low in the slow cooker.

It was absolutely delicious!

Slow Cooker Pizza Pasta

The other day, Dave and I were both in the mood for pasta. However, while our kitchen is under renovation, I have no oven and no stove top.

After searching around the internet, I came up with a delicious slow cooker recipe that doesn’t even require boiled noodles. It’s a delicious “remake” of our favorite pizza pasta dish!

As you know, Dave and I are smack in the middle of a huge kitchen renovation — which means our kitchen is completely unusable. Thankfully, I received a brand new Stovetop Slow Cooker from Hamilton Beach and have been using it to whip up all sorts of delicious slow cooker recipes.

My most recent recipe was chocolate cake… and was it ever good!

Slow Cooker Western Egg Casserole

Thanks to my new meal planning method, we have breakfast for dinner once each week. We do this partially because we really like breakfast foods, but also because breakfast foods are great way to get lots of protein without spending money on expensive cuts of meat.

However, the one thing I don’t always like about breakfast foods is the inability to prepare them ahead of time — so I’m really excited to share this delicious slow cooker breakfast recipe with you today!

Slow Cooker Vietnamese Chicken

posted by Andrea | 01/14/2012 | 15 comments

Earlier this week I shared a few slow cooker receips I want to try in the coming months — and I mentioned that I already had one very successful and extremely delicious meal to share with you… Vietnamese Chicken!

Since I had all the other ingredients in our house — and since this recipe specifically calls for FROZEN chicken, I quickly whipped it up and threw it in the crock pot. The chicken was absolutely delicious, full of flavor, and actually quite “Asian tasting” — which is something I’ve never been able to achieve with other recipes!

Slow Cooker Recipes I Want to Try in 2012

posted by Andrea | 01/10/2012 | 17 comments

I got a new slow cooker for Christmas and have already used it a couple of times. I actually have 3 different slow cookers — all different sizes — but to be honest, I haven’t used them as much as I should.
So this year, my goal is to use a slow cooker once a week — or at least a few times each month.

I’ve already made a few really delicious meals {recipes coming soon}… but here are a few more I definitely want to try this coming year.

One of the reasons I love using my crock pot is because I can just dump all the ingredients in, turn it on, and walk away. I don’t need to stir a boiling pot and I don’t need to pull something out of the oven on time… I can simply go about my day and come back in several hours to a hot meal and a delicious smelling kitchen!

Today I’m sharing 2 really simple crock pot recipes from a loyal reader… they’re so delicious!

Homemade Yogurt

Have you ever tried making your own yogurt? If you are like me…probably not! I was perfectly content to purchase my store-bought yogurt and I figured homemade yogurt would be too difficult to make — and it can be. However, about a month ago, I came across a recipe for making yogurt  in a slow cooker. It didn’t seem nearly as time-intensive or overwhelming so I figured I would give it a try. Now I’m hooked! The recipe below makes an entire […]
