A Different Perspective (That Time My Child Out-Organized Me!)

posted by Andrea | 03/14/2019 | 23 comments

Many of my pervious in-home organizing clients told me that the most helpful part of working with a professional was having a different perspective to help them “see” simple storage solutions that were literally right in front of them… but yet not “visible” for whatever reason.

I understood what they were saying (and I know it’s true) but I honestly never experienced it in my own life until a recent situation when Nora out-organized me!!

How I Store and Organize Everything In Our Kitchen

Soon after we finished our massive kitchen renovation in 2012, I shared detailed pictures of the insides of all our cabinets and drawers.

Since then, we’ve added several more children to our family, I’ve changed so much of how I cook and bake, and we have different storage needs for older kids, school lunches, different snacks, etc. etc. So… I decided it was time for a (very long and detailed) updated post!

How We Make Space For Our Kids’ “Treasures”

Even before having children of my own, I was adamant that I could have BOTH a large(ish) family AND a clean home without spending hours every day picking up after people.

So far, I’ve been able to keep our house neat and organized enough for my standards with minimal effort, while letting my children display, collect, save, cherish, and sometimes “hoard” their most favorite trinkets and treasures!

A Different Perspective on ALL Our Stuff

Consider how you might feel with less stuff to store, less stuff to organize, less stuff to clean around, less stuff to buy, and less stuff to think/worry about. Then consider how much of your stuff you truly NEED.

Today I’m sharing a different perspective on all our STUFF… I’d love to hear your thoughts!

An “APPLE” a Day Keeps The Clutter Away

Over the years, I’ve joked about the fact that the old saying holds true for me, “An Apple A Day Keeps the Doctor Away” as I’m a HUGE apple-lover, and I’ve been blessed with extremely good health for my entire life.

More recently, however, a reader shared a clever little acronym with me — regarding APPLES and how they help her keep clutter under control!!

Although purging is the BEST way to make more space… there are plenty of other ways to maximize the space you have.

A clutter-free home and life is not always as simple as making a few wise choices… but I do think that if we get in the habit of making better choices on a regular basis, our efforts to declutter and simplify will be THAT much easier.

Today I’m sharing 5 decisions that could cause excess clutter in our homes… as well as a few better decisions to make instead.

When it comes to clutter in our homes, the biggest stumbling block is often our own brains! We make it out to be this HUUUUUUGE issue, and instead of just getting started, we continually put it off because it just never seems like the “right” time.

Sound familiar? If so, grab a trash bag and a donation box, read today’s post, and purge something RIGHT NOW!

How We Deal with Half-Dirty Clothes

posted by Andrea | 01/8/2019 | 31 comments

I’m still committed to “only” doing laundry twice a week (a system that’s been working really well for me for over 2 years), and since I don’t want to do 10 loads of laundry on those 2 days, I’ve come up with a few different methods of dealing with what I consider “half-dirty clothes” — clothes that have been worn but aren’t worthy of washing just yet!

To Sell or to Donate: That is the Question

posted by Andrea | 12/20/2018 | 62 comments

Over the past few years, I’ve talked a lot about selling our unneeded items. However, what I might not have said in so many words is that I most definitely do not SELL everything we purge. In fact, the majority of it is donated on a regular basis as I just want to get it out of our home ASAP!

Today, I’m sharing my opinions on when to sell and when to donate…

READER QUESTION: What To Do When Decluttering Feels Wasteful

posted by Andrea | 12/14/2018 | 39 comments

I’ve always been a perpetual purger as I know I MUST stay on top of the clutter to prevent it from spiraling out of control. Sometimes I do feel a little wasteful — purging, trashing, and recycling things so regularly; but I just don’t have the extra energy required to deal with so much stuff.
